Briscola game info

Briscola is a trick-taking card game from Italy. It is considered to be one of the three national card games in Italy.

Briscola is played with 2 or 4 players, using 40 cards from an Italian-suited deck. The game is played counter-clockwise. The main skills required for Briscola are tactics and memory. There is a medium random chance involved in the game. A game takes around 25 minutes to play. Briscola is related to the Spanish card game Brisca.

How to play Briscola

Players

Briscola can be played with two players, or with four players. When playing with four players, two partnerships of two players are formed.

Deck and cards

Briscola is played with an Italian-suited deck consisting of 40 cards. Each of the suits has ten cards: Ace – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – Knave (Fante) – Knight (Cavallo) – King (Re).

The cards are ranked as follows from highest to lowest: Ace – 3 – King – Knight – Knave – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2.

Each card has a value:

  • Ace: 11 points
  • 3: 10 points
  • King: 4 points
  • Knight: 3 points
  • Knave: 2 points
  • 7, 6, 5, 4, 2: 0 points

Briscola can also be played with French-suited cards, by removing the 8s, 9s and 10s. The Queen corresponds with the Knight, and the Jack with the Knave.

Objective

The objective in Briscola is to win tricks and earn the majority of card points.

Deal

Each player is dealt three cards in counter-clockwise direction. The next card is placed face-up in the middle of the table. This card is called the Briscola. The trump suit for the game is determined by the briscola. The rest of the cards go face-down into a pile.

Gameplay

The player to the right of the dealer leads the first trick. Briscola is played in counter-clockwise direction.

The player with the highest card played wins the trick. The highest card is either the highest trump card, or if no trump card is played, the highest card of the lead suit. It is not required to follow suit in Briscola.

The winning player collects the cards from the trick. Then all players draw a card from the stock, beginning with the player who won the trick. When all cards have been drawn from the stock, the game continues without drawing new cards. The player who won the trick also starts the next trick.

Scoring

When all cards have been played, each player (or team) calculates the total value of the cards they won during the game. The team with the highest value wins the round and earns one point. The total value of a deck is 120 points, so the player (or team) scoring 61 or higher wins. If both score 60, the player (or team) who won the last trick is the winner of the point.

Game end

The first player (or team) that reaches the target score wins.

System requirements

Briscola can be played in all modern browsers, on all device types (desktop, tablet, mobile), and on all operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, . ).

Read this first: Scrabble FAQ

How are the words validated?

The game uses a dictionary that follows the same language rules as the NASPA Word List 2020 Edition (NWL2020). Those rules are made by NASPA, the North American Scrabble Players Association. You can find an overview of the accepted two-letter words here.

Can I challenge a word placed by the computer?

No, words placed by the computer cannot be challenged. The computer only places words that are in the word list we use, you can be sure they are valid.

How are the letters dealt?

The dealing of letters is completely at random, so it means that it can happen that you have (almost) only vowels, or don’t receive high value letters. If you are not happy with the letters you receive, blame probability calculation! You can always swap your letters if you cannot find a good word to play.

Can I see the letters on the rack of the computer?

No, this is not possible. In a real-life game of Scrabble, you also cannot see the letters of your opponent. The official rules also state that you cannot see your opponent’s rack.
